Lolita the Blue and Gold Macaw

Lolita's Personality
Macaws are great companion birds. They are smart and affectionate. These birds are ideally suited to families with a variety of members. They are easily bored and find different ways to entertain themselves if their owners do not interact with them enough. Macaws that aren't socialized may become aggressive and may even bite. It is important to establish clear boundaries so that the macaw doesn't feel threatened.
Blue and Gold Macaws, in general are active birds that enjoy playing, interacting and climb. They require 2 to 3 hours a day in their cages to get physical exercise and mental stimulation. They enjoy playing games, learning tricks, and listening to music. They also love going to the playgrounds and parks as well as hiking and going to local restaurants and bars. They are not just a wonderful pet, but they are is also a great companion for children.
Despite their adoring appearance, these birds are very loud and can cause a disturbance to those living near. They can emit ear-splitting calls and screeches which could be disruptive to those living in condos or apartments.
The species is also monomorphic. Males and females are difficult to differentiate. Because of this, the only way to reliably determine sex is through DNA testing. Once sex is established pairing the birds can be attempted and breeding may begin.
Like all pets, Blue and Gold Macaws require training to learn commands, phrases, and tricks. This is not a quick process, and it's crucial that the owner has patience and understands that this isn't something to be undertaken lightly. The use of positive reinforcement can help speed up the process and aid in resolving any issues with behavior.
Lolita's care
Since the 1960s, activists have been pleading for Lolita to stop performing tricks at Miami Seaquarium. They also want her relocated to an open-water pen. After the 1993 movie Free Willy sparked public outrage over the returning of orca Keiko into the wild, conservationists were hopeful that Lolita was likely to suffer the same fate. The people who are Lolita's captors – the Dolphin Company - have ignored the advice of a veterinary doctor and continue to put her in danger. They also put her in a tank that is one-and-a-half times smaller her natural habitat.
Fortunately in 2022, the new owner of Miami Seaquarium pledged to work with an organization of Lolita advocates called Friends of Toki and the Lummi tribe who view her as a relative and plan to eventually move her to the open water. The plan included a sanctuary pen in Washington's westcoast, where she could live for the remaining days, receive human care, and be monitored by scientists. The sanctuary pen would be hundreds of times bigger than her Miami home, and would be surrounded by the ocean itself and not an actual concrete tank.
If the plan had been successful, Lolita (also called Tokitae or Toki) could be alive. In the wild, killer whales are social animals who connect with their family members until they die. Lolita has lived isolated at Seaquarium for the past 40 years. Many activists across the country have called for Lolita's release from Seaquarium and then release into the wild. Then System II builds on the foundations established in System I, with exercises using the equipment. It also introduces teachers to the exercises on the Spine Corrector, Magic Circle, Foam Rollers and Bars. This module comes with a handbook, and a DVD featuring Lolita teaching you the System.
After graduating from the teacher training program at Lolita, you will be ready to teach the Pilates Method anywhere in the world! This program will prepare you to work safely, efficiently and professionally with clients. You will gain a deep understanding of the various exercises and how they interact. You will be able to apply this understanding to any body and to help your clients feel strong, safe and secure. Lolita's Diet

Lolita's Health

Despite the continuing health concerns of Lolita many are hopeful that she may be closer than ever before to an unspoiled life. The new owner of the Seaquarium has pledged to removing the whale of her tank and into her home waters in the Pacific.
The decision comes after years of public pressure, including from PETA and PETA, which demanded that the Miami Seaquarium release Lolita into an ocean-side sanctuary where she could swim deep in the ocean and perhaps even reunite with the orca believed to be her mother. Sadly the plans came too late for the beloved whale who died on Friday from what was believed to be a renal problem.
